Indoor Sensory Ideas And Activities

The snow continues to fall here in Michigan, and it seems like forever since my family and I were able to enjoy the outdoors without worrying about frostbite. Cabin fever is really beginning to set in. I cannot wait for the warm sunny spring days to arrive, and to go for a bike ride with my family! The cabin fever that my family and I have been experiencing lately seems to be a common theme among many of the families with whom I have been working. This time of year seems to be difficult for all of us, and especially for children who have sensory processing difficulties. During the mid-winter months, we typically see an increase in sensory seeking behaviors due to the limited amount of play time outside or elsewhere. The holidays are now over as well, which means that the lights and intense sensory input of the holiday season has past. It is still important to make sure that the sensory needs of our kids are being met. Here are a few simple sensory ideas that you can use during the indoor times of the year.

Set-up a sensory course. Children always seem to enjoy making and playing on indoor sensory courses. You can set-up a simple course in your living room, bedroom, or basement using household materials. Couch cushions, pillows, flat sheets, and other items are wonderful materials that you can use to create a sensory course. Your children will have a blast jumping into a pile of cushions, or crawling under a sheet! Increase tactile input. Many children enjoy touching or manipulating sticky or textured surfaces that provide them with great tactile input as well. Playing with shaving cream on a table surface can be very enjoyable, and it is also a great cleaning activity! You can make sensory stress balls by filling balloons with flour or sugar. Finally, finger painting with pudding or jell-o can be enjoyable, too. Take part in physical activities. Even when the weather is cold outside, you can still participate in physical activities. Playing hide and seek, doing the crab walk, or log rolling are great for sensory input as well as increasing physical activity. You can even do a 3-legged race indoors! If the weather is tolerable, then shoveling snow, ice skating, sledding, making snow angels, and building snowmen are great outdoor physical activities. Turn daily chores into the Winter Olympics. Playing games while doing chores always seems to make them more enjoyable for everyone. You can use those chores to help meet sensory needs as well. Shooting baskets with dirty clothes, playing pretend hockey with brooms and dust pans, and being a figure skater while picking up toys can be great fun!

We can all beat winter cabin fever by including more sensory activities in our daily routines. For children with sensory processing difficulties, it is even more important to make sure that they are getting the input they so desperately need. By following these simple sensory ideas, I hope everyone will be able to get the input they need during this time of year. Just keep in mind that spring really is right around the corner!

Thanksgiving Games – Great Ideas for Indoor Playing

In the United States, Thanksgiving kicks off the official holiday season. Traditionally, it is celebrated with family. Family members get together and have a meal of traditional Thanksgiving foods. These foods include things such as turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and warm pumpkin pie. Besides all the great food, it is also a time to give thanks for everything good that has happened throughout the year, and gives us a good chance to show appreciation for those who support us.

As you can see, Thanksgiving allows for some wonderful emotional warmth just when the weather is starting to turn cold. Many people get the day off work, and can use Thanksgiving as an opportunity to forget about all your stress and responsibilities. And of course, you can pair that with reconnecting with family and friends who you don?t get to see much.

Obviously, Thanksgiving is a great holiday for us as adults. We can enjoy the food and conversation, but after the meal, children can quickly become bored. The vast majority of schools give their students four or five long vacation days, which gives kids a lot of chances to make mischief! So it is up to you to find things to keep them entertained and out of trouble. You want to still be able to enjoy socializing with family, but still keep an eye on the kids. Here are a couple of fun indoor games then can be played by them.

The Stuffed Animal Playground

The kids can really have a lot of fun if you get a few plush animals and gather them all together. Plus, this way they?ll all have a toy, and there won?t be any fighting. If you choose a theme with the stuffed animals, you can really let their imaginations run wild. For example, get together all sorts of forest animals, such as stuffed foxes, stuffed bunnies, stuffed raccoons, or even a teddy bear. Then the kids can pretend that they are in the woods as the animals prepare for the winter season. This could even provide entertainment for the adults, as the kids could put together a play for everyone to watch while they are having dessert!

Coloring Books: Holiday or Winter Themes

This is a good suggestion for young children. Get together some coloring books and let them pick out their favorites pictures to draw on. Choosing books with holiday themes will make the kids feel particularly special, with a turkey, a pilgrim, a reindeer, Santa Claus, a menorah, a snowman, or anything else you can think of. This will allow them plenty of room for creativity. Plus, it has the added bonus of being a quiet activity. You can enjoy dinner without having to keep a stern eye out for trouble, and there are no dangerous objects involved.

Guessing Games

For older children, it often pays to be a bit more organized. Find some simple pictures in a magazine, and cut them out. You can find such things as animals, cars, plants, or clothing. Glue them to a piece of cardboard and put them in a box so that each child can pick one without anyone else seeing it. Then, have the other kids guess what the image is from clues that are given out.

Believe me, a couple games and entertainment will do a lot for keeping your Thanksgiving fun for everyone. Keeping the kids happy will allow you to enjoy dinner and conversation, so try them today!

Great Gift Ideas For Winter Sports Enthusiasts

It's no surprise that winter sports are popular around Christmas time, with many areas of the country just minutes or hours from great skiing during this time of year. But what do you get the person in your life that's crazy about skiing or snowboarding? Here are some excellent gift ideas that are sure to please the winter sports enthusiasts in your life:

It's not easy to buy someone a new pair of skis, boots or even clothing since it's difficult to know what size they wear. Instead of the types of gifts that require proper sizing, consider gifts that will surely be used and won't be brought back to the store because they don't fit. One excellent gift idea is a lift pass to their favorite ski area. All you need to do is find out where they ski. You'll find most ski destinations offer ski or lift passes to purchase easily online. Ski goggles are also a gift that will surely be appreciated and used by the recipient. Ski goggles are an easy gift to size as well, since goggles are usually a "one size fits all" type of item. There's a wide range of ski goggles, including sexy and sleek versions that will provide any skiier with a comfortable, clear and safe experience for their eyes while on the slopes. You may also consider a helmet, which is only available in small, medium and large sizes, so it's quite easy to pick the right size, as long as you have an idea of the size of the recipients head. A helmet is a gift that you can feel great about, since it has the potential to keep your loved one safe and may even save their life.

Your loved one may enjoy listening to Beethoven while swooshing down the slopes, if so, then consider getting them one of the new wireless audio kits now available. These kits will work with their MP3 player and allow them to use wireless headphones that fit snugly inside of their helmet or cap. An iTunes gift certificate would go well with this gift, or even a new iPod.

More great and economical ideas for skiiers include gloves, ski caps and socks. Gloves are a good choice since they are generally available in set sizes like small, medium and large or men's and women's. Ski caps are a nice idea for skiiers who don't wear helmets and they're available in a huge range of styles, colors and fabrics. You'll surely find one that fits the personality of the recipient. You don't want to forget the socks. Yes, it may seem boring to some people, but thick, cozy winter socks are a practical gift for any skiier or snowboarder, that they'll appreciate whether on the slopes or off.

Perfect Stocking Stuffers

Gift certificates to an outdoor or sporting goods store are a fantastic gift idea for anyone who is in need of some new gear. This way, they can get the perfect size. Gift cards also fit perfect in a card or stocking. Don't forget accessories either. There are many small and low cost accessories that any skiier or snowboarder will be able to make use of. Consider ear warmers, earmuffs, scarves, headbands, ski wax, lanyards, GPS devices, weather radios, watches or sunglasses.

I'd like ideas for exercise and fitness activites that 2 people can participate in together. I'm specifically looking for activites that require two people -- tossing a medicine ball for strength or holding someone's feet for situps. Any other ideas? Thanks!
